Adrian Wiszniewski’s GBH series were created to accompany his play written in collaboration with composer Gordon Rigby, The Girl, the Boy and the Hag. The play was first performed at Oran Mor, Glasgow, in 2007 with music by members of the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra. A self-styled modern myth with pan-European influences, the play takes the character of Giselle from the German folktale and that of Galahad from Arthurian legend, and places them together in a nightclub called The Glade. With the pun of ‘GBH’ alluding to the violence central to the story, the woodcuts depict scenes from the play: the hag inserting a worm into Galahad’s side to capture his heart; the giant wolf mauling Giselle’s landlady; and Giselle riding a unicorn through a forest.
