Lupus in Fabula is one of the few works by the artist using found or made elements embedded into the surface of the painting. The painting Bird has a similar composition and also uses embedded objects.
Both paintings are formally symmetrical using a design based on medieval banners depicting the cult of St. Francis of Assisi. A central bird motif and abstracted tree forms with tiny birds can be seen in both works. Accounts of the Saint’s life include stories of him preaching to birds.
