The title of this work refers to the biblical Book of Revelation believed to be authored by St. John the Evangelist. Revelation Chapter 16, verse 13 reads: ‘And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet’. This painting takes inspiration from the extraordinary imagery of the medieval Apocalypse tapestry in Chateau Angers, France. St. John is depicted enthroned on the Greek island of Patmos, his birthplace. He is portrayed as a false prophet, with the beast, and the dragon, all spitting frogs.
