El Hacedor (The Maker), takes its name from a collection of poems and short stories by Jorge Luis Borges. In a story called The Yellow Rose a dying poet is unable to find the words to describe the beauty of the flower before him.
The plant models featured in the painting were designed in 1886 by the Robert Brendel Company. On the left is Scottish heather and on the right Cypress spurge. Unlike Borges’ dying poet Brendel’s models successfully describe the beauty of each flower. His models have gone on to be prized art works in their own right.
