'I have never enjoyed the experience of gazing for long at myself in a mirror – so this self-portrait is me when perhaps I know most who I am and what I am about – as on a fine bright long summer day and with no other immediate commitments to distract me. I stride out in happy anticipation across the sands near my Tiree home on my way to draw at some spot among the rocks. This is a hand-tinted collagraph print and I used a textured speckled handmade paper to relate to the sandy sea shore feel of the piece. The collagraph block was made from card and paper in my thatched house during some dark stormy December days – and brought back to Aberdeen where I made several prints from it at Peacock Printmakers Workshop. These prints – all slightly different – I hand-tinted with watercolour.' Private View: A Visual Investigation of the Artist as Subject, Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney, 1994
