'Grytviken was the first whaling station in the Antarctic waters – founded by Captail Carl Anton Larsen in 1904. Here in the graveyard Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried. At his gravestone seafarer visitors to Grytviken of many nationalities still are leaving tokens of respect. From the graveyard is a trail (through and around elephant seals!) to the work buildings; barrack used by the works; church and to the manager’s house – which became the South Georgia Whaling Museum in 1992. This is maintained by the British Antarctic Survey and the government of South Georgia. The museum has a rich and fasincating display of whaling, sealing, exploring and natural history of the whole island. The whalers’ church built in 1913 is an interesting austere building containing memorabilia from the whaling era and from Shackleton’s time. Shackleton’s funeral was held from this church with Norwegian whalers serving as his pallbearers.' Journal entry, South Georgia, 3 March 2007
