The Academicians’ Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of selected works by Scottish artist George Macpherson RSA (1935 - 2018).
George’s abstract paintings express the textures and sounds of nature, the magic of the Highland landscape and the warmth of Gaelic song and dance; elements garnered from the artist’s childhood near the River Shin. An esteemed accordionist, George developed his painting in tandem with his talent for music and allowed the movement and traditions of both artforms to interplay within his work.
Born in Invershin and educated at Golspie High School, George attended Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 1958, winning the RSA Stuart Prize the same year. He travelled to Spain for the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship in 1959, and in 1960 he returned to Edinburgh to take up the position of Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He held this position until 1990, when he retired to East Lothian.
George was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1987 and was made a full Academician in 2005. His work is held in British and international collections including the Scottish Arts Council; Edinburgh City Chambers; Edinburgh Schools Collection; Argyll and Bute District Council; the Jean Watson Trust; the Wilton Lodge Gallery.
