    Rocks and Sea (detail)

The origins of this exhibition of works by Frances Walker began in discussions about supporting artists to make new research. It is often assumed that early-career artists need this support most, and indeed this is where much of the financial heft is weighted. Established artists in mid or late career are often overlooked for this backing, the assumption being perhaps that they are able to support themselves. However, support isn’t just about money. It is also about an understanding of the creative process required to undertake new research and to enable this time outside of day-to-day pressures.

Frances’ career, beyond her teaching, has been a constant process of research. We are familiar with her views of coastal Scotland and indeed these are greatly admired and enjoyed in our homes and in many collections, both public and private. These works, and those of further afield, have been made as a result of her constant engagement and study of the topography of the land.

As an emerging artist, Frances was the recipient of both an Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship (ECA) and a Royal Scottish Academy Carnegie Travelling Scholarship (both 1953). On this ‘Traveller,’ as the awards were affectionately known, rather than gravitating to the art meccas of France or Italy, Frances made her way by train and hitch-hiking across post-war Europe.

Awarded one of the inaugural RSA Gillies Awards (1978), Frances travelled to the far north, into the open landscapes of Finland whilst a Scottish Arts Council Bursary enabled a residency at Birsay in Orkney (1981). A further short residency at Sabhal Mor Ostaig on Skye (2004) supported a range of research which became as much a study of weather as of landscape and human activity. These peripheral and empty spaces are a constant draw for Frances, however, they not desolate and untouched. They have had many centuries of human habitation; vital positions for countless families and communities working together throughout human history. Yet, many of these sites are quiet again now. The clues of human activity there still – an empty croft, a noust, a whaling yard or rusting hulks.

    Winter Shore Walk (detail)

We are also shown the rapid change of landscape through modern interference. Loss of habitat, pollution and tourism all forcing our natural history to compete, rather than co-exist, with contemporary issues. Frances’ work shows us this and more: to enjoy our precious land and remember its history with a hope that we will carry these histories forward and that these places remain wonderful for our descendants.

It is a great pleasure and honour for the Academy to present these paintings and prints from across Frances’ career. We have been there with her since that early Carnegie Award and throughout her journey since. Now, as Frances approaches her 92nd year, we don’t intend this exhibition to be a retrospective, and indeed we couldn’t possibly do her career any justice in this modest scale. However, the selection hopes to take a glimpse at works where travel and the support of funding (and time), have enabled new research to flourish as part of a lengthy continuum of practice.

  • Biography

    Biography

Born in Kirkcaldy in 1930, Frances Walker studied at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), gaining a Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1952, followed by a Summer Bursary at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, returning to ECA for a postgraduate year.

In 1953 Walker won an Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship from ECA and the Royal Scottish Academy Carnegie Travelling Scholarship, allowing her to travel to several European countries including Greece and Iceland. On returning to Scotland Walker trained to be a teacher at Moray House College and took up a position as sole Teacher of Art for all schools in Harris and North Uist in the Western Isles. She would return to the mainland in 1958 to become a Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, where she would teach until 1985.

  • In 1974 Walker became a founding member of Peacock Printmakers, Aberdeen, where she served as Chair of the Board during the 1980s. Elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1970, Walker became a full Academician in 1983. In 2003 Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, awarded Walker an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters and in 2020, shortly after her 90th birthday, she was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours as Artist and Printmaker and for Services to Scottish art.

Walker’s paintings and prints are held in numerous major public and corporate collections including Aberdeen Art Gallery; the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh; the Fleming Collection, London; Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh; the Maritime Museum, Irvine; Kirkcaldy Art Gallery; and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. In 2017 Walker presented a living bequest of the Antarctic Suite paintings and prints to the McManus Gallery, City of Dundee. Walker lives in Aberdeen.
