We are delighted to wish Frances Walker RSA a happy 90th birthday this August.
One of Scotland’s most highly-regarded artists, Frances Walker is a painter and printmaker based in Aberdeen. Known for her elegant, evocative studies of the Scottish landscape, Walker's oeuvre spans not only decades but continents, with projects undertaken in Iceland, Finland, Antarctica and Yugoslavia amongst other locations. Wistful and luminous but always precisely observed, Walker's paintings and prints present the landscape as a treasured space of endless wonder.

Born in Kirkcaldy in 1930, Walker studied at Edinburgh College of Art where she was taught by Sir William Gillies RSA. After graduating she travelled through Europe before becoming the sole teacher of art in Harris and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. She latterley took a position as Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen.
Walker's experience of teaching art in the Hebrides led to a life-long love of wild and desolate places. Since then, she has chosen to depict the most remote landscapes and her compositions are often based on coastal reaches, rock formations and isolated beaches. Walker divides her time between Aberdeen and the Western Isles, especially Tiree, where she owns a thatched cottage.
A founding member of Peacock Printmakers, Aberdeen, Walker has been instrumental in the resurgence of interest in traditional printmaking techniques in Scotland. A printmaker of virtuosic ability, in recent years Walker has focused on the medium as her primary mode for conveying the beauty and turbulence of the landscape.

In August 2021 The Academicians' Gallery will host an exhibition charting Walker's illustrious career.
Walker was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1970 and became a Member in 1983. Through her long association with the RSA, she has been a generous supporter and promoter of the Academy. In advance of Walker's 2021 exhibition, we are pleased to continue to work closely with her. A selection of her works are currently available for sale.
